Benno Landsberger war seit 1908 Student und von 1929 bis 1935 Professor an der Universität Leipzig. Er trug maßgeblich zur Entwicklung des Faches Altorientalistik im 20. Jahrhundert bei.
Wir präsentieren archivalische Dokumente aus dem Nachlass und Umfeld Landsbergers (geboren in Friedek am 21. April 1890 – verstorben in Chicago am 26. April 1968) aus zwei Universitäten, Leipzig und Jerusalem, um die weitere Forschung über einen der größten Meister der Disziplin zu fördern.
Das Leipziger Material wird seit mehr als 80 Jahren an der Universität Leipzig aufbewahrt und befindet sich heute im Besitz des Altorientalischen Instituts. Sie besteht hauptsächlich aus Briefen an und von Landsberger aus der Zeit seiner Professur und der Zeit seines frühen Exils in Ankara, Türkei.
Das Jerusalemer Material ist Teil von Landsbergers Nachlass, den er dem Institut für Archäologie der Hebrew University vermachte. Seine Privatbibliothek ist dort seit vielen Jahren Teil der Bibliothek für Assyriologie. Im April 2012, als Nathan Wasserman im Keller des Instituts für Archäologie gelagertes Material katalogisierte, fand er zwei Kisten und identifizierte sie als Archivdokumente von Landsberger – Briefe, Manuskripte öffentlicher Vorträge, einige Fotos und viele Notizen und Notizbücher seiner frühen Tage als Student in Leipzig – bisher völlig unbekannt. Das Material wurde von Wasserman gesammelt und geordnet, und Teile davon wurden zur öffentlichen Verwendung eingescannt (von Mijal Ribco). Im Juni 2012 ging Michael P. Streck die Unterlagen durch und erstellte einen vorläufigen Katalog des Nachlasses, der nun auf dieser Seite öffentlich zugänglich gemacht wird.

Die Dokumente, hauptsächlich Briefe und Postkarten, werden in der Reihenfolge gelistet, in der sie in ihren Ordnern abgelegt wurden und sind deshalb nicht strikt chronologisch geordnet. Transkriptionen der deutschen Kursive, damals gebräuchlich aber für moderne Leser schwer verständlich, wurden von Hannes Leonhardt und Antonia Pohl angefertigt.

Die folgenden Briefe 26-43 und 45-69 bilden zusammen mit den Dokumenten 1-3, 71, 82 und 84-86 die erhaltene Korrespondenz Landsbergers mit seinem Schüler K.F. Müller (Pastor in Wiederitzsch). Hauptthema ist neben dessen Promotion vor allem die Entstehung der Edition von ana ittišu unter Mitarbeit des zu dieser Zeit nervlich schwer angegriffenen Hans-Siegfried Schuster. Die Hälfte der Briefe stammt ursprünglich aus dem Nachlass K.F. Müllers (Durchschläge, zudem erkennbar an der fehlenden Unterschrift und nicht hinzugefügten Diakritika).
