Abstract
Hatem Elliesie is the Acting Professor for Islamic Law at the Institute of Oriental Studies at the University of Leipzig for the summer semester 2021. He is a Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle/Saale and Head of Junior Research Group at the University Erlangen-Nuremberg. He previously served as Acting Professor for Islamic Law at the Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Münster in the summer semester 2017.
Elliesie has been a member of the Arabic and Islamic Law Association since 1998, was elected to its executive committee in 2005, served as its Vice Chairperson from 2009 until 2023, and was elected as Chairperson of the Association ever since. In addition, he has been a member of the executive committee of the African Law Association since 2005 and was elected as its Chairperson in 2023, as well. Elliesie is the founder and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Law & Islam as well as the editor of the series ‘Law, Society and Islam’ and ‘Studies on the Horn of Africa’.
