The Freundeskreis serves to promote knowledge of the Ancient Egyptian art and culture and also serves to provide non-material and material support for the Egyptian Museum of the University of Leipzig. Here you can find all the information about the engagement and the events of our Freundeskreis.

What is the Freundeskreis?

The Freundeskreis was founded in 1992 by friends of the house to create a forum for potential sponsors and friends of the Egyptian culture. With increasing activities of the association and over the course of the past years, the number of members has continuously grown. The Freundeskreis supports the museum in many different ways.

We demonstrate our commitment by supporting and organising scientific lectures for our members and for a broad audience. We also support public relations work and the preparation of special exhibitions as well as further museum activities. The offer for our members includes a differentiated program of events such as, for example, an annual excursion to other museums or special exhibitions, etc. Additionally, every member receives a copy of the magazine “aMun” which is published four times a year by the association of the Freundeskreise of the museums in Berlin, Hildesheim, Leipzig and Munich.

Our support

The list of the offers of our Freundeskreis is long.

Many of the lectures at the Egyptian Museum of the University of Leipzig would not be possible without our Freundeskreis, since the university's funds for such projects are becoming increasingly limited. Even elaborate restoration projects, such as the restoration and preservation of the outer coffin of Herischef-hotep, could only be made possible through the commitment of the Freundeskreis.

Events such as the Museum Night Halle/Leipzig, also supported by the Freundeskreis, would not be feasible without the personal commitment of volunteers.

The members of the Freundeskreis can profit, among other things, from the following offers:

  • Regular lectures, guided museum tours and special events
  • The magazine for the friends of the Egyptian museums (Bonn, Berlin, Hanover, Hildesheim, Leipzig, Vienna), which is published twice a year. The magazine provides members of the Freundeskreise with extensive information and it is sent to them free of charge.
  • An excursion, at least once a year. Examples:
    • 2015: Munich – State Museum of Egyptian Art
    • 2016: Castle Waldenburg – Museum, Park and Cabinet of Natural History
    • 2017: Karlsruhe – Exhibition “Ramses – Göttlicher Herrscher am Nil“ (Ramses – divine ruler along the Nile)
    • 2018: Nebra Ark and the Goseck Circle
    • 2022: Berlin – Exhibitions “Abenteuer am Nil“ (Adventures on the Nile) and “Schliemanns Welten” (The Worlds of Schliemann)
    • 2023: Gotha – Exhibition “Freimaurer und Mysterien Ägypten“ (Freemasons and mysteries of Egypt) at the Ducal Museum
